Elizabeth - Isaac Russell

If you've never heard of Isaac Russell, you should. So let me formally introduce him to you now, with perhaps his most aesthetically pleasing song to date - Elizabeth.  If anyone knows the full Russell family story, then you know the hardships they endured.  In fact, it is an unfortunate tribulation that many families experience. I, for one, have experienced it first hand, which is why this song has such a profound effect on me every time I listen to it. It's a story of loss, and the battles one undergoes when someone they love is diagnosed with cancer.

Isaac's mother died of breast cancer when he was only 12 years old.  Like any death, the family took it hard. Isaac turned to writing as an outlet, and at the age of only 15, produced his first full-length album under the North Palette Record label.

The song "Elizabeth" discusses the families final trip as a family before his mother died, a trip to the beach.  I'll admit, this song hits directly at home with me.  My grandmother (one of, if not, the closest person in my life) died when I was 11 of cancer.  The lyrics "they gave you pills, that made you swell...lost the hair on your head, self-image shot to hell" gives me shivers every time.

Please, take the time to listen to this song, especially if you have lost someone close to you.  Its a great song for reflection. Below is Isaac performing the song:

Golden Train - Justin Nozuka

So, let me first off forgive myself for any errors in the following post, as I am posting from my mobile phone. But, getting down to the nitty gritty, I'd like to introduce my second song to y'all: "Golden Train" by Justin Nozuka.

This song was introduced to me a few years ago, and I've absolutely adored it ever since.  The lyrics and meaning are straightforward, yet, veiled in a shroud of caprice.  Justin is very good at this if you listen to some of his other songs. The meaning seems clear, however, there is always a metaphor or two in the actual song itself that throw you off the meanings trail.  The main intention of the song is to talk about the insecurities of a relationship.  He basically wants to know - tomorrow, if something better comes along (golden train), would she take the ride and leave him, or stay with what he has to offer. He "knows for sure, is that (my) love for (you) is deeper than any root or stone."

Desert Sunrise - Brett Dennen

I wanted to start this blog with a band/musician that I know most people have never heard of, or if they have, a song that is rather overlooked. For the first posting, I decided to post about Brett Dennen, and his song "Desert Sunrise."

The song talks about a lizard who is cold and lonesome from the night that has surrounded him.  The sunrise is the woman that comes and is his savior, in a sense. The sunrise (women) shares her love and warmth through the rays that she gives off.  Her warmth/love helps him forget about his lonely or dismayed past and shows him a brighter future.  However, I feel, that the "lizard" is hoping for a sunrise and not a sunset with this new sun.  Now that he's found her, he doesn't want to go back to the dismal life he had before. The problem is, is the "lizard" is unsure how to tell the sun that he wants her to stay..

The overall meaning that Brett is getting at is a story of lonesomeness, finding love, and the fight to keep it.  He wants us to know that there are brighter days in even our darkest hours. Hope. Hope. Hope.
